How to use modifier geometry in CURA

A step-by-step guide to adding modifier geometry in CURA, so you can change wall count, top and bottom layers only where a part actually needs it.

Due to my recent video, I got a lot of questions how to simply add Modifier Geometry in CURA. So here is a step-by-step guide on how it’s done in CURA 4.5 but the process should be very similar, also in older releases.

  1. Load your part into CURA, select it and add a Support Blocker (E)

CURA with the face shield headband loaded and selected, the Support Blocker button highlighted at the bottom of the left toolbar

2. Select the rough location you want to place it on your part

A small yellow support blocker cube dropped onto the middle of the headband

3. Scale, move and rotate it into place with the normal tools

The blocker scaled and moved with the normal tools until it covers the whole front section of the part

4. While the part is selected go on Per Model Setting and select Modify settings for overlaps

The Per Model Setting menu open on the Mesh Type row, with Modify settings for overlaps highlighted

5. De-select Infill only

Mesh Type now Modify settings for overlaps, with the Infill only checkbox highlighted ready to be de-selected

6. Click Select settings and choose the settings you want to change. In this case Wall Line Count, Top Layers and Bottom Layers

The Select Settings dialog with Wall Line Count, Top Layers and Bottom Layers ticked under Shell

7. Change the settings to the desired values

The three settings changed inside the modifier to Wall Line Count 1, Top Layers 0 and Bottom Layers 0

8. You’re done!
